1966 Jaguar XKE
When a car not only makes a splash, but changes the game, that’s a car worth collecting. This is the origin story of the Jaguar XKE.
In 1961 British automaker Jaguar set out to create a car that was the best of all worlds: Styling, performance, and price. Driving and performance features such as rack-and-pinion steering, disc brakes, triple SU carburetors, and independent front and rear suspension showed the world what was possible in a sports car – and the competition took note.
The XK-E evolved from Jaguar’s D-Type racing car, which boasted three consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans under its belt. The allure of a race car-inspired consumer sports car was strong. The car was loved by the driving enthusiasts, who named the vehicle as one of the “World’s 100 Most Beautiful Cars of All Time.”
In terms of performance, the car backs up its racing heritage with pure performance driving. Zero-to-60 in just over six seconds. A top speed of 131 mph. This car leaps off the line and holds enough power through all gears to ensure everyone gets a good look at the car’s sloping back end.
Inside this cat are front bucket seats separated by a padded arm rest. The rear seats are relatively roomy for a 2+2. Real people can actually sit in back. The 3-spoke sport steering wheel and large knobbed stick shift remind you this car is built for speed. The car’s high roof line creates an almost panoramic effect with the windshields, side windows, and rear glass. It’s exactly the kind of car you appreciate when touring the countryside or driving along the coastline. Rear cargo space is generous for a sports car.
With its classic “Jaguar look,” the XK-E continues to turn heads more than 50 years since it first hit the market. Legend has it that the great Enzo Ferrari himself declared the vehicle to be “the most beautiful car ever made.” High praise from an ultra-competitive rival. Those who know cars understand the enormous impact of the quick, powerful, and gorgeous XK-E.
