1968 Corvette C3

Restored as New

L36 427ci/390hp V8 Engine, Restored by NCRS judge awarded a top flight winner matching numbers, score of 97.8% Options 4sp A.C. T-Tops. Given all of the virtues and vices of American technology in auto making, the 1968 Corvette heralds the “once-upon-a-time” feeling Corvette owners can never forget, that irresistible temptation to buy American.

Although simply “Corvette,” whilst the Stingray moniker was dropped, a kindred nautical spirit was retained as the newly redesigned body of the Corvette C3 was patterned after the Mako Shark II designed by Larry Shinoda. The chassis and engine consisted of mostly carried over components from the previous generation.

Of the nearly 30,000 Corvettes built in 1968, only around 30% had the uncommon removable section roof and rear window. Additionally rare is this limited version L36 V8 427 engine version which boasts a Rochester 4-barrel carburetor and delivers 390 hp.

The body’s concealed headlights sported a new design which utilized vacuum control to hide-away headlights and wiper compartment systems. Several quirky new features included: a seat-belt warning light which had to be manually disengaged regardless of seat-belt use, door ajar warning buzzer, with chrome-plated ignition shielding covering the distributor to reduce radio interference, and a fiber optic light monitoring system. Many other design changes are notable lie the battery relocation from the engine area to one of three compartments behind the seats. Other new features included a rear window defroster, anti-theft alarm system, and improved emissions.
