Erik Carlsson's Giant-Killer: the Front-Drive Saloon that Won the Monte Carlo Rally
The Saab 96 is aviation thinking applied to a small family car: a teardrop body shaped by aircraft engineers, front-wheel drive when almost nobody else used it, and a freewheel in the transmission inherited from its two-stroke origins. From 1967 the three-cylinder two-stroke gave way to the Ford-built V4, which turned the 96 into a tough, torquey everyday car that would run for decades in the Swedish winter.
